Terms of Service
These terms are the agreement between you and Michael Sewell, a sole proprietor who runs Jozu (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using Jozu you accept them. Our Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data, and our 特定商取引法に基づく表記 page gives the seller and payment details Japanese law requires.
The service
Jozu is a web app for people living in Japan. You upload or photograph Japanese letters and documents, or paste in their text, and Jozu translates them, organizes them, tracks their deadlines, and answers your questions about them using AI.
We work to keep Jozu available and to improve it, which means features may change. We will tell you in advance by email about any change that takes away a significant part of what you are paying for.
Your account
- You must be at least 18, or have a parent’s or guardian’s consent, to use Jozu.
- Give us an email address you can receive mail at, keep your sign-in details to yourself, and tell us at support@getjozu.com if you think someone else has used your account. You are responsible for what happens in your account.
- Your documents stay yours. You give us only the permission we need to store and process them to provide Jozu to you, as described in the Privacy Policy.
Free trial, subscription and billing
- New accounts get a free 14-day trial, starting when the account is created, that covers up to 3 documents. No payment details are needed for the trial.
- After the trial, or once you have used its 3 documents, adding, translating or asking about documents requires a Jozu Pro subscription. You can always view the documents you have already added.
- Jozu Pro costs ¥2,500 per month. That is the total you pay: the seller is exempt from Japanese consumption tax, so no tax is added. We will give you at least 30 days’ notice by email before any price change applies to you.
- Stripe processes payments by credit card. The first month is charged when you subscribe, and the subscription then renews and is charged automatically each month until you cancel.
- If a renewal payment fails, Stripe will retry it for a short time and your access continues meanwhile. If the payment still cannot be collected, the subscription ends.
Cancellation and refunds
- You can cancel at any time from the Billing page. Your subscription then stops renewing and you keep full access until the end of the month you have already paid for.
- We do not refund partial months, except where the law requires it.
- After cancelling you can still sign in and view your documents. You can delete your account and its data at any time from Settings, which also cancels your subscription straight away; see the Privacy Policy.
Acceptable use
Please do not:
- upload anything you do not have the right to share with us;
- use Jozu for anything illegal, or to harm, harass or defraud anyone;
- try to get into other people’s accounts or data, or probe, disrupt or overload our systems;
- scrape Jozu, resell it, or use it through automated means to build a competing service.
We may suspend or close an account that breaks these rules. Unless the problem is serious or urgent, we will contact you first and give you a chance to fix it.
AI translations and answers
Jozu’s translations, summaries, extracted deadlines and answers are produced by AI. They are usually accurate, but they can be wrong or incomplete: names, dates, amounts and handwritten text are the most common trouble spots.
- Jozu is not legal, tax, immigration, medical or financial advice, and it is not a certified translation.
- Check anything important against the original document, and ask the office that sent it, or a qualified professional, before acting on it.
- Deadlines Jozu finds or reminds you about are a convenience. You remain responsible for meeting your own deadlines.
Limitation of liability
We provide Jozu “as is”. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for losses caused by relying on a translation, summary, reminder or answer without checking it. Where we are liable to you, our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, including our liability for intentional misconduct or gross negligence, or your rights under Japan’s Consumer Contract Act.
Changes to these terms
When we change these terms we update the date at the top. For material changes we will email you at least 30 days before they take effect. If you do not agree, you can cancel before then; continuing to use Jozu after that means you accept the new terms.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Japan. Any dispute will be handled by the courts of Japan that have jurisdiction under Japanese law.
